This picture illustrates a VW Polo on an exhaust gas analyzer test bench. This test bench has nothing to compare with the standard exhaust gas test benches that make only instant snapshots of the gas emissions. This bench simulates real driving conditions, including cold start, heavy traffic, stop at red lights and highway driving. Only such a test bench gives a realistic view of a vehicle exhaust gas emissions, while a normal standard test bench that make only instant measures will only be capable to detect an engine or exhaust system problem.

It is such a test bench that Fuelcat Europe Ltd uses to test its bioethanol kits on a large panel of vehicles.

The driver (weighting 75kg according to a European norm) will have to follow a line displayed on the screen of a PC by respecting the speed, gear and engine rpm indicated on that same screen. During all the test, exhaust gases are constantly measured in real time.

On the left screen, you can see the virtual road that the driver has to follow while the right screen display all the measured parameters in real time.
